Cognizant Employees ( including the retrenched, bench and others employees) are facing major difficulties to secure a job in new organisation because of Raj Mehta’s DEADWOOD comment

Deadwood statement by Raj Mehta

we don’t want to deploy CTS resources at least now because of the DEADWOOD statement made by your COO.

On 21st august we published a brutal story of how Cognizant is retrenching mid and senior level employees. We also exposed the big bang statement by Mr. Mehta ( statement made by Mr. Mehta – ” We want to weed out deadwood higher up in the pyramid so that juniors can grow”. ) about this so called involuntary separation.

Almost 45 days are past and we are hearing more horrible stories from SM+ to SD level employees about this forced separation and inhuman treatment meted out to the bench employees (CTS calls it resource pool).

Many such retrenched employees contacted us and one common factor came out is as follows: Whenever they are trying to explore a role in a new organisation , the new organisation clearly states that ” while we know you are technically fit for our role but we don’t want to deploy CTS resources at least now because of the DEADWOOD statement made by your COO which has chance of impacting the morale of our current employees. The current employees may think we are recruiting the incompetent employees from CTS.”

Now, this is nothing but a disaster to the career of an employee who has to feed his family, pay kid’s school fees, take care of medical needs and pay EMIs of home loans etc from selling his professional skills to an employer.

We don’t support any retrenchment which is illegal in India (without prior government permission). But we know that more or less every IT organisation is doing it. We are continuously protesting and publishing articles against this practice.

But CTS creates a history where their COO loudly announced in papers that they are going to weed out employees.

We have following questions for the senior management of Cognizant:

  1. On what evaluation basis you tagged employees as Deadwood’s?
  2. As per our information the real senior leaders (CXOs, Presidents, EVPs, SVPs &VPs), who are mostly Delivery or Marketing head of different verticals, horizontals and leaders of overall CTS, are not asked to leave at all . These are the people who provide direction and guidance to the organisation. And if today CTS is not doing well they should take the responsibility. Only SM+ to SD+ and few AVPs are victims of this retrenchment, who are also politically not aligned to some powerful Godfather in CTS.
  3. Which level of juniors are promoted to the leading position in Cognizant?
  4. If the separation is involuntary, why your HR is forcing employees to sign a Mutual Separation documents. We have received some photo copies of the whole agreement from retrenched employees (disclaimer : NDLF has not verified the information independently with CTS) and a para of the same is published below.

As it becomes obvious that the terms Involuntary and Mutual separation don’t go together WHAT IS THE REAL TRUTH? What are things CTS is hiding?

Now let us look at about the large pool of bench employees of the Cognizant.

  1. Against most of them there is a remark of “NO Demand”.
  2. They are by default getting rating as MS and MA, which makes them vulnerable as poor performers tag.
  3. They will not get any annual increment.
  4. They will not get the variable part of their salary ( Surprisingly CTS calls it Bonus).
  5. They are continuously pressured by HR/Talent group for resignation till they submit their resignation.

And this is a continuous process in CTS ( can we forget 2016-17 layoffs) and we are hearing another BIG lay off in the name of “Poor Performers” ( the ratings till SA is published and M+ will come out this October) we will publish details as we are collecting data from employees.

Our NDLF IT Employees Wing is in regular touch with some of the employees who are already affected and are in bench. We want the remaining employees (who are still not in touch) to reach out to us for any help possible. For the employees in the bench or MA/MS ratings, please do not succumb to the pressure of forced resignation, it is completely illegal in India and we can provide you the knowledge and support to fight the same.

We demand that Mr. Raj Mehta should publicly retract his “Dead Wood” comment providing a comprehensive explanation on how it is wrong and Cognizant should drop this illegal and unfair retrenchment plan.

– Senior Cognizant Employee

NDLF IT Employees Wing president Mr. Shyam has published a book “IT life – FUN or Problems” Please read this book ( you can buy or read online), please go through the same and you will have more information about the rights of employees.

You have to fight in court, the court registry will not list your case, you have to find ways to fight this in US Court.

They have to be shamed in public, find ways instead of protests. I have sufficient evidence to shame them.

Calling its employees ‘DEADWOOD’ can only come from the DAWOOD of Cognizant – Rajeev Mehta, who is running Cognizant as an underworld Don.

Tax evasion, bribery, B1 visa misuse, valuntary retirement, illegal retrenchment, inhuman working conditions etc on his name, Rajeev Mehta should quit Cognizant for the sake of its 200K+ employees.

Raj Mehta is one of them. There is a big coterie within Cognizent is making money for themselves in terms of promotion, shares and salary hike.
Raj would not have made this comment without prior approval of his immediate boss Frank, CEO.
So a complete refresh of CTS seniors is required to save this company before it is too late

Same happened with me..I was given poor rating and I was put on bench and asked to crack exams even. I was told if you would fail exam you will have to leave..Second option they told me “that put resign and tie up with quests four four month”..and after that my IT career has finished..My father was suffering from cancer..and in that period my younger sister too expired.. Now my father too passed away.. I had to return to my town

This is a part of life, don’t make Cognizent responsible for your family tragedy.
If you would have been competent you would not got poor rating in the 1st place.

In CTS the poor performers are repacked by good ones. This company does not give you lifetime job guarantee.
Appraisals are happening regularly and honestly.
There are so many good HR practices in CTS.

In this world competent people only survive

Very sorry to hear Saurabh. Cognizant is no more an employee friendly company. These days they only send mailers for donating blood. They don’t care for employees and would not hesitate to throw their parents if they aged. There are few immatured people around who would not understand the value of social support at trying times. Cognizant appraisal system is a bad evaluation practice.

Follow legal terms while doing retrenchment. If company has authority to layoff using appraisal, any company can terminate employees as per their own wish. Now appraisal happening to identify bottom 10. If company want to do more, nxr year it will do appraisal for finding bottom 10. Law of land should be followed. Employee can be retrenched based on law of land. Labor dept should be involved. Severance package should be paid. Verizon is removing 44000 employees in US and severance pay of 3 weeks salary for every year of service is paid in addition to bonus/shares and other retiral benefits. Law is followed in US and fly in air in India is the problem

Dear Shyam, how Cognizant management could be booked for voilating the labor law in India? I would rely on NDLF to file the case in the court of law or guide me how an individual can do so.

You 1st go to labor commissioner office immediately and file a notification there. Do some googling to find the details of the address and process.
But if you have resigned, then not sure how strong your case would be

Please sue them in USA Court. No disparagement is a mutual term. It is ironic how someone has been a DEADWOOD all his career is calling laid off employees DEADWOOD. I hope they are paying 6 months severance and not disparaging employees in public. Someone needs to teach these Cognizant poster boys a lesson.

Dear Jayesh, Individual can do if there is threat to their employment by filing 2A. Group of employees can file 2K. I have written various articles on this. As union, we can file PIL against CTS. But we feel more than creating litigations awarness on retrenchment is illegal is very important. If this awarness spread and if every employee resist to resign, it will be big problem for IT companies. Currently by various false threats and harrasements, company make employee submit self-resignation and show that as normal attrition to exit. So if this awarness created, it will be big bottleneck. They can terminate random 1-2 employees but definitely not like they do now. So create awarness to your fellow employees, read our articles like IT life – Fun or problems (both series) to face various false threats and file complaints in lc office if u face any challenges. This puts hard stop end to layoffs
