Tragic Suicide, Media Blackout and Government Apathy – the Plight of IT Employees

I have written an article about the suicide of an IT employee after separation process was initiated for him by his company.

Unfortunately the news is true. The name of the employee is Ganta Krishna Chaitanya and he was working in DXC Technology, Bangalore

I ended that article with my prayers and hopes that the suicide news will prove to be fake. As this news was not covered in any of the national media and I believed that there is a high chance of this being false. But unfortunately the news is true. The name of the employee is Ganta Krishna Chaitanya and he was working in DXC Technology, Bangalore. He is married in 2012 and has a small kid.

As per his facebook page, he joined DXC Technology on 4th Dec 2015. The company initiated the separation process in less than 30 months of his joining date. It is really bad to see IT companies initiating separation process without following any basic norms. Companies are recruiting people when they get projects and terminate when project gets over.

IT companies used to call laptops, printers and all other appliances as resources. And, employees in IT industries are also termed as resources. That is the reason, companies forget that these ‘resources’ have family and friends, dependent parents, school going kids, housing loan commitments and they worked day and night for years to earn profit for the company. If the the resource is no longer required, separation process is initiated.

Labor unions exist across all sectors including for white collar workers in professions like teaching, banking or for blue collar workers in sectors like transport, factories etc. But, from the beginning IT industry created a myth that unions are not required for IT employees. They isolate, divide and rule the employees using their unscientific appraisal system and terminate employees as per their needs.

Unfortunately Chaitanya has given his life, in reality there are 100s of other Chaitanyas who lost their jobs and are struggling for their living after they are fired illegally.

We are really wondering why the news of Chitanya’s death is not covered in any of the mainstream media. Definitely media attention is required to safeguard employment rights as they are considered as the fourth pillar of democracy. As media is failing their responsibility in this case, we are using our blogs to bring the news to the 37 lakh employees in Indian IT sector.

IT employees are one of the high tax paying sections of the society. Now, the industry is restricting retirement age of employees to 30-40 years. An employee joins the company at 20-21 years of age (without many commitments and with a lot of energy) and after extracting maximum work from the employee, the company wants to throw them out.

Not only that.

We have tears on our eyes to see what this means now.

If you take Verizon and Tech Mahindra termination scenario, company is deducting 30% on notice money paid for income tax. That means IT employees are paying taxes even when getting separated.

We don’t want government of India to declare IT employees exempt from Income tax. But atleast govt should come forward to implement strict laws to protect employees from the more deadly separation process.

I am definitely against suicide but if separation can lead to this act for an educated, married person with small kid, then imagine how cruel is the separation process? What impact it is going to create to the employee life will be well understand from his decision.

So IT companies like companies in other sectors should abide by law and follow legal process on employee issues.

IT employees should strengthen IT unions. That’s the only solution to protect employee rights from the attack by profit greedy managements.

    IT company hiding this kind of suicide cases as pesonal problem.Most of IT people aloof and not bothered about what is happening around them,IT company is utilising this.
    DXC employees should fight for Chaitanya,get company to knees and get compensation,and also job in DXC for Chaitanya wife.

      Me and one of my friend was also asked to leave the dxc company within 6-7 days time but somehow due to Gods sake and I managed to search another project with one of my friends help and saved my job but there is no guarantee that when they can ask to leave the job again. I am staying here on rent, my child is going to school and have big emi for loan but managers are also doing this due to their personal issues with employees like me. My manager did this with me.

    You know in last 2-3 months,17-20 No.(may be more) only in Bangalore,employees in DXC Technology died because of WFR

    Why can’t we tag Modiji and ask for his explanation on this? Why there is no social security for IT employees or for any taxpayer when government is taking all their hard earned money

    India is the worst country when it comes to Middle class. .. here only Rich enjoy along with Politicians.. like Vijay Malays and other give a thumb to us and move out with 10000 cr. or the poor class get all benifits and incentives from so called Govt. which is essential buy only 10 % tricle down to him…. but we middla class after putting all hard work and money .. pay tax through nose for everythign including water.. and get ???????

    no security… ( even a cab driver and abduct us)
    no infrastructure ( see the pathetic condition of our towns and roads)
    no social security ( after retirement.. get to your knees now…. as Govt. knows how to collect tax…)
    and Employees… well its time to do something…

      I kindly request to all middle class employees that plz come forward and unite, make a group and let’s do protest on the door of Modiji then perhaps something positive can be happened for all of us else the condition will be worst in coming g few years

    Understand one thing that IT employees especially union people have become activist.

    Now transition from IT sector employee (submissive/non aggressive) to an activist(agaggressive/confortanionist) is not easy. I can summarise tools extremely critical to a activist/organisation doing activitism-:

    1. RTI(On all Goverment organisations)

    2. Protests

    3. Recommendations and taking regular followup with authorities.

    4. Filling court cases(PIL/Writs) @ High Courts and Supreme Court.

    5. Filling caveats at SC/HC on any litigation inwhich IT Employees interests are getting affected.

    In addition, union has following advantages:-

    1. Stage dharna without taking any permission in any places unless section 144 (unlawful assembly) is slapped on such areas.

    2. Leaders cannot be easily be arrested.

    3. Fight elections and sent representatives to the law making body(MP/MLA/MLC)
